APS Bus Driver’s Artistic Display Honors The Mosleys

Meet Paul Ortiz, Aurora Public Schools bus driver by day and talented pencil portrait artist by night. He has drawn the faces of many iconic figures, but his latest masterpiece of the late Edna and John W. Mosley has steered his artistic career in a more meaningful direction.

Lieutenant Colonel John W. Mosley was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. His wife, Edna, was the first African American to serve on the Aurora City Council.

The portrait is displayed in the Edna and John W. Mosley P-8 school alongside a bio of the dynamic duo. Ortiz hopes that when students look upon it, they are inspired by The Mosley’s story of hard work, perseverance and dedication to their community.

Ortiz, who retired after 26 years in the U.S. Navy, had the honor of personally presenting the original artwork to Lt. Col. Mosley before he passed away.

The Denver Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. contracted Ortiz to draw all 19 of the documented Tuskegee Airmen of Colorado. The artwork will be displayed at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum and two military history museums in Colorado Springs.

APS Calendars

In October, APS convened a calendar committee to develop options for the 2016-17 Conventional School Calendar. The committee is recommending a draft calendar that is very similar to the one we are currently using, with the following school start and end dates and breaks:

  • July 29 – New teachers report to buildings
  • Aug. 3 – All teachers report to buildings
  • Aug. 8 – First day of school, Grades 6-12
  • Aug. 10 – First day of school, Grades 1-5
  • Aug. 15 – First day of school, Preschool and Kindergarten
  • Oct. 10-14 – Fall recess
  • Dec. 19 – Jan. 2 – Winter recess
  • Jan. 3 – No classes for Grades P-5
  • March 27 - 31 – Spring recess
  • May 25 – Last day of school

The committee is recommending this approach because the calendar worked well for APS staff and families this year and a similar calendar would provide a smooth transition into the next school year. Furthermore, due to enrollment and capacity challenges at several of our schools, the recommendation would allow APS to focus on developing calendar options for 2017-18. This will include a four-track, year-round calendar possibility for overcrowded schools.

The APS Board of Education will consider the calendar recommendations at its Jan. 5 meeting and will likely make a decision on Jan. 19.

2017-18 Calendar

As a reminder, we will convene a 2017-18 Calendar Committee in January 2016 to develop both conventional and four-track, year-round calendar options and evaluate the logistical aspects of implementing a year-round calendar. The Board has directed staff to develop the year-round calendar option as a possible solution to enrollment and capacity challenges at P-8/K-8 schools east of Buckley Road. The year-round calendar would potentially begin in July 2017 at the following schools: Aurora Frontier P-8, Aurora Quest K-8, Clyde Miller P-8, Mosley P-8, Murphy Creek P-8 and Vista PEAK P-8.

The 2017-18 Calendar Committee will be comprised of staff and parents from schools that have been identified as potential candidates for the year-round calendar (listed above), key department and division staff members, and community members. We will be recruiting committee members in the coming weeks.

Read in English.

APS Calendar for

The Board of Education approved the 2016-17 conventional school year calendar at its meeting on Jan. 19 based on recommendations by the Calendar Committee. The committee was comprised of school staff, parents and APS administrative staff.

Some of the 2016-17 calendar highlights include:

  • The school year begins for grades 1 through 12 during the week of Aug. 8. Preschool and kindergarten students begin school on Monday, Aug. 15. Please check with your school for specific dates.
  • The school year ends for most students on Thursday, May 25. Please check with your school for specific dates.
  • Fall Break occurs at the end of the first quarter from Monday, Oct. 10 through Friday, Oct. 14. This will ensure uninterrupted learning during the first quarter.

The new calendar is similar to the one in place for the current school year. The committee recommended this approach because the calendar has worked well for APS staff and families this year. We are confident that a similar calendar will provide a smooth transition into the 2016-17 school year.

Mosley Students Googly-Eyed Over Google Expeditions

Edna and John W. Mosley P-8’s third through eighth grade students recently went from classmates to travel buddies in a matter of seconds, thanks to Google, Inc. The tech company’s Expeditions Pioneer Program took students on virtual reality field trips to explore wonders of the world through Google cardboard glasses that provide 360-degree panoramic views of more than 100 sites.

While at their desks, students ventured through the Amazon, swam with sharks, climbed Mt. Fiji and fittingly experienced flight as Tuskegee Airmen. Teachers guided the tours and enjoyed watching their lessons come to life as the room continuously echoed with oohs and ahhs.

Mosley, a tech-focused school, was one of a few schools from around the world Google personally visited to pilot the program.

APS is thrilled to see students engaged on a new level, experiencing places school buses can’t go.

Aurora Public Schools invites your input as we work to anticipate the need for possible changes to school calendars and school facility needs for the next several years. The Board of Education began an extensive process in 2014 to identify various options to address school crowding.   From this process, two top options emerged: 1) hold a possible bond election to fund new schools and 2) consider a possible return to a Year-round school calendar at some of our schools. As part of this work, a BOE- sanctioned Year-round Concept Committee, comprised of APS staff and parents, is currently evaluating the logistical aspects of implementing a contingency year-round calendar and reporting this information to the Board.  A second committee is developing both the district school year calendar for the 2017-18 school year, and as a contingency plan, a potential four-track, year-round calendar at some P-8 and K-8 schools.

Which schools may be involved?
If this contingency was needed, the year-round calendar could potentially begin in July 2017 at the following schools: Aurora Frontier P-8, Aurora Quest K-8, Clyde Miller P-8, Edna & John W. Mosley P-8, Murphy Creek P-8 and Vista PEAK Exploratory P-8.

Committee Process Timeline
The following is a timeline of the committee process and Board of Education consideration:

  • Jan.-April 2016: The committees will develop calendar options and a year-round concept plan, gather community feedback and share recommendations with the APS Leadership Team.
  • May 2016: The Board will consider calendar options and information, including the year-round calendar contingency.
  • June-Aug. 2016: The Board will consider options to address APS facility needs, including possible authorization of a bond election.
  • Dec. 2016: APS will present the 2017-18 District School Year and Year-round Calendar options to the Board for a decision.

APS has opened the North Salida Way road extension on the APS Community Campus. The road extension connects the campus to Sixth Avenue and will improve access to Aurora Quest K-8, Edna & John W. Mosley P-8 and APS support facilities in the area. The road is configured for a right turn only onto Sixth Avenue (eastbound).

APS expects the road extension to ease traffic flow on the campus, which was previously accessible only via 2nd Avenue or Centretech Parkway east of Airport Boulevard.

CareerTrek Helps Steer Students Toward Postsecondary Options

career-trekAurora Public Schools' eighth-grade students might be ready to jump out into the real world. Really. Well, almost.

Recently, all eighth graders from across the district traveled to the Professional Learning and Conference Center for the third annual CareerTrek where they met and chatted with employers and universities about the possibilities awaiting them once their K-12 education ends.  APS staff in the Postsecondary Workforce Readiness department collaborated with businesses and higher education institutions to develop relevant topics and a variety of hands-on activities to support students’ understanding of careers while reiterating the real world relevance of 21st Century Skills.

This year's theme, aptly titled Roadmap to Your Successful Future, proved exciting and engaging for attendees and aligned with the three goals of the APS strategic plan. CareerTrek exposes students to various career fields and supports the expectation that all students will have the plans, skills and credentials that they need upon graduation to shape a successful future.

Taking it a step further, organizers used racetrack decorations -- including a model race car -- throughout the venue to help students relate to the message. In addition to the more rigid programming, students also learned some of the basics, including how to tie a necktie and craft a resume.

South Middle School students reflect on their experience at CareerTrek

"I thought it was fun because I went around to all of these jobs, and I actually want to do them." – George West

"I got to discover jobs that I didn't know were out there, so I got interested in other jobs." – Aaliyah Jones

"I found out that I was interested in things I didn't expect to be interested in." – Jacqueline Bernal

APS Preschool Screening BannerAll children ages 3 or 4 on or before October 1 are age-eligible for the Aurora Public Schools Preschool Program. In order for your child to be considered, a parent or legal guardian must attend the preschool screening process. Your child must be present for the screening and you must bring the required registration documents. Visit http://admissions.aurorak12.org for a list of required documents. If your name does not appear on the child’s birth certificate, you must bring legal documentation of guardianship.

Appointments are not necessary. Due to a limited number of preschool slots, attendance at a screening doesn’t guarantee placement. For more information, visit http://ece.aurorak12.org or call 303-364-9371 or view the flier.

Recognizing Excellence in APS

Erin AutobeeAurora Public Schools is excited to see the APS 2020: Shaping the Future strategic plan coming to life across the district. Students, parents, staff and community members are going above and beyond to ensure APS students have the plans, skills and credentials they need to shape successful futures.

Each month, we celebrate great examples of this work in our P-20 Learning Communities. Following are highlights from Community L.

Erin Autobee
Fulton Academy of Excellence technology teacher Erin Autobee (pictured above) has helped students earn more than 600 digital badges in her first year! Thanks to her hard work and dedication, 98 percent of Fulton’s fifth-grade students will earn an Invention Summit Badge. These credentials will help open doors as students execute their plans.

Lilly Klatt
Edna & John W. Mosley P-8’s Parent-Teacher Association was established only two years ago, but the PTA has already made a significant impact on the school. Parents have dedicated their time and talents to organizing countless activities that have brought the school and community together. In addition, the group raised over $40,000 for the school! We commend the group’s president Lilly Klatt for her leadership and dedication.

Becca Peters
Aurora Quest K-8 Parent Becca Peters is an integral part of the school community. She always lends a helping hand to Quest’s clubs, activities and classrooms. For the last two years, Ms. Peters has managed the Box Tops program, which has funded numerous student activities. She has also been a great addition to the school accountability committee and served on various interview committees.

Gael Guzman
Vista PEAK Exploratory eighth-grade student Gael Guzman’s ability to persevere is infectious. Despite the challenges he has faced, he continues to excel. His positive outlook paired with support from the APS Rebound Ombudsman Program has allowed him to experience greater success, both academically and personally. His peers consider him a leader. Principal Yolanda Greer says Mr. Guzman is a bright and hopeful student who makes her entire staff very proud.

Andrea Yahner
When it comes to unwavering compassion and dedication, Vista PEAK Exploratory Primary Counselor Andrea Yahner is the poster child. Ms. Yahner uses various platforms to help students, staff and parents weather any storms they are going through. She has implemented many programs, organized various school activities and provided countless resources that help people cope with their emotions.

Tanya Crawford
Tanya Crawford goes above and beyond her duties as a paraprofessional at Vista PEAK Exploratory every day. She works tirelessly to fundraise for and coach an all-inclusive cheer program, which she has lead through many school competitions. She assists the school’s athletic director and coaches, found and oversees the Vista PEAK Talent Show and consistently implements new procedures and systems for the school.

Mike Fehringer, Danette Mozes and Jen Fryer
During the 2016-17 school year, Vista PEAK Exploratory’s student, staff, parents, community members and local business volunteers have given more than 2,300 hours of their time to the school. Mike Fehringer and Danette Mozes have volunteered over 100 hours each and Jen Fryer has completed over 200 hours!

Gloria Medina, Honorio Mercado, Lori Carlstrom
Tollgate Elementary School Custodians Lori Carlstrom, Gloria Medina and Honorio Mercado are incredible employees who constantly exceed expectations to make Tollgate a special place for children. They take great pride in ensuring the school is clean and comfortable for students and staff every day.

We thank each individual for making a difference in our students’ lives by dedicating their time, talents and resources.
